Abb\u00e9 Pierre est n\u00e9 \u00e0 La Calamine le 10 mai 1941. Il est ordonn\u00e9 pr\u00eatre le 28 juin 1969 \u00e0 la Calamine par Mgr Van Zuylen. Ce dernier lui avait demand\u00e9 de s\u2019engager dans un vicariat, \u00e0 Eupen ou Verviers, avant d\u2019envisager d\u2019autres missions, car, le souhait de l\u2019abb\u00e9 Simons \u00e9tait de partir \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger. Auparavant, huit jours avant son ordination, l\u2019abb\u00e9 Simons avait \u00e9t\u00e9 convoqu\u00e9 par son \u00e9v\u00eaque qui lui dit que le pr\u00eatre qui devait partir pour le Rwanda ne peut s\u2019y rendre pour raison familiale. L\u2019abb\u00e9 Simons se voit donc proposer de le remplacer.<\/p>\n<p>Abb\u00e9 Simons a fait ses valises pour prendre l\u2019avion vers le Coll\u00e8ge Christ Roi \u00e0 Nyanza au Rwanda. Il a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 enseigner les cours de latins, de fran\u00e7ais, de religion et de grecque. Le soir, apr\u00e8s le cours, lors de ses promenades dans le centre-ville de Nyanza, il croisait les enfants \u00e0 probl\u00e8mes, seuls, d\u00e9munis et abandonn\u00e9s. C\u2019est en discutant avec eux qu\u2019il a compris qu\u2019il devait faire quelque chose pour eux. C\u2019est gr\u00e2ce aux enfants des rues qu\u2019il a appris la langue du pays, le kinyarwanda. Il d\u00e9cide alors de fonder un orphelinat. Il commence avec un petit nombre et quelque temps il re\u00e7oit une centaine d\u2019enfants tout en continuant \u00e0 enseigner. Il fonda un deuxi\u00e8me orphelinat \u00e0 Mayaga.<\/p>\n<p>Pour arriver \u00e0 prendre soin de ses enfants, il a eu l\u2019aide des \u00e9v\u00eaques li\u00e9geois et des paroissiens de La Calamine qui r\u00e9coltaient des fonds. La plupart des enfants \u00e9taient orphelins de deux parents ou venant des filles-m\u00e8res et\/ou p\u00e8res inconnus. Ils leur donnaient une bonne \u00e9ducation et des valeurs d\u2019entraide en poussant les plus \u00e2g\u00e9s \u00e0 s\u2019occuper de plus jeunes. Durant le g\u00e9nocide contre les Tutsis en 1994, il a pu sauver la totalit\u00e9 de tous ses 120 enfants.<\/p>\n<p>Abb\u00e9 Pierre Simons est mort au Rwanda la nuit du 23 au 24 Ao\u00fbt 2020 \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4pital de Butare. Rendons hommage \u00e0 ce samaritain qui pendant plus de 50 ans a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent et actif au service des enfants et de la jeunesse abandonn\u00e9e du Rwanda. Il est pass\u00e9 par bien des \u00e9preuves, mais toujours son \u00e9nergie, sa foi et son esp\u00e9rance ind\u00e9fectibles ont triomph\u00e9. Pour les 50 ans de son ordination en 2019, il \u00e9tait retourn\u00e9 en Belgique pour le c\u00e9l\u00e9brer. Quelques jours apr\u00e8s, il avait mentionn\u00e9 qu\u2019il retourne au Rwanda pour y achever sa vie.
