Le 8 ao\u00fbt 2024, l’archidioc\u00e8se de Kigali a d\u00e9voil\u00e9 le plan architectural de la nouvelle Cath\u00e9drale Saint Michel, qui sera \u00e9rig\u00e9e \u00e0 l’emplacement de l’ancienne prison de Nyarugenge, connue sous le nom de \u00ab\u00a01930\u00a0\u00bb. Ce projet, ambitieux et moderne, intervient dans un contexte de critiques croissantes envers le Cardinal Antoine Kambanda, figure religieuse majeure au Rwanda, particuli\u00e8rement soutenue par le r\u00e9gime actuel.<\/p>\n

En 2019, lors de sa nomination officielle dans une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie tenue au stade Amahoro \u00e0 Remera, le Cardinal Kambanda a exprim\u00e9 son souhait de construire un \u00e9difice religieux majestueux en l\u2019honneur de Dieu. Ce projet de cath\u00e9drale, devant offrir une capacit\u00e9 d’accueil pour 5 000 fid\u00e8les et pouvant accueillir entre 10 000 et 20 000 personnes dans ses espaces ext\u00e9rieurs lors de grandes c\u00e9l\u00e9brations, s\u2019inscrit dans une volont\u00e9 de repr\u00e9senter la culture rwandaise tout en respectant l’architecture traditionnelle de l’\u00c9glise. \u00ab\u00a0Elle doit incarner une architecture qui allie l’identit\u00e9 eccl\u00e9siastique et la culture rwandaise\u00a0\u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 le Cardinal Kambanda.<\/p>\n

Pr\u00e9sent \u00e0 cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement de 2019, le Pr\u00e9sident Paul Kagame avait promis son soutien pour la construction de cette cath\u00e9drale et a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 que l’\u00e9difice soit construit sur un nouveau site. En cons\u00e9quence, le terrain de l\u2019ancienne prison de 1930 a \u00e9t\u00e9 attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9glise pour ce projet. Les plans ont \u00e9t\u00e9 publiquement expos\u00e9s, mais les d\u00e9tails concernant le d\u00e9but des travaux restent sous la responsabilit\u00e9 du Cardinal Kambanda.<\/p>\n

En 2023, l’Office de d\u00e9veloppement du Rwanda (RDB) a annonc\u00e9 que 40 milliards de francs rwandais \u00e9taient en cours de collecte pour financer ce projet. Actuellement, la cath\u00e9drale existante \u00e0 Kigali, situ\u00e9e \u00e0 Kiyovu dans le district de Nyarugenge, au sein de la paroisse Saint Michel, est jug\u00e9e trop petite pour accueillir des \u00e9v\u00e9nements majeurs.<\/p>\n

Fond\u00e9e en 1963 comme paroisse du dioc\u00e8se de Kabgayi, la paroisse Saint Michel est devenue cath\u00e9drale en mai 1976, lors de la cr\u00e9ation de l\u2019archidioc\u00e8se de Kigali. Ce projet de construction de la nouvelle cath\u00e9drale intervient alors que la population rwandaise, y compris les catholiques, exprime un m\u00e9contentement croissant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des r\u00e9centes d\u00e9clarations du Cardinal Kambanda. En mai 2024, lors d’un discours \u00e0 la paroisse de Musha, ses propos ont \u00e9t\u00e9 per\u00e7us comme un soutien au r\u00e9gime autoritaire de Paul Kagame, qualifi\u00e9s d’insensibles par plusieurs fid\u00e8les. Le Cardinal a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u00ab Cette ann\u00e9e marque trente ans durant lesquels, pour la premi\u00e8re fois dans notre histoire, aucun Rwandais n\u2019a fui, n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9 ou n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 chass\u00e9 de son foyer, ce qui est un motif important de reconnaissance envers Dieu. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Ce discours a suscit\u00e9 l’indignation parmi ceux qui critiquent le r\u00e9gime pour sa gestion des droits de l’homme et pour la r\u00e9pression des voix dissidentes. Le projet de la nouvelle cath\u00e9drale, bien que symbolique d\u2019un renouveau spirituel et architectural, est donc \u00e9troitement li\u00e9 \u00e0 ces tensions politiques et sociales, refl\u00e9tant les divisions croissantes dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 rwandaise.<\/p>\n
