Kinshasa, DR Congo – Russia has vowed to support measures to end the instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo caused by the aggression against the country by rebels, the Russian deputy minister of foreign affairs, Mikhail L. Bogdanov, said on Thursday on arrival in Kinshasa.

The head of the Russian diplomacy, who has already visited the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, said that his country preferred a peaceful solution instead of a military one.

‘Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and, within the framework of its bilateral relations with DRC, will support the resolution of the problem of aggression against DRC during the deliberations of the National Nations General Assembly in New York,’ Mr. Bogdanov said.

He said a meeting bringing together representatives of the African Union (AU), the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization of DRC (MONUSCO) and the ambassadors of neighbouring countries is slated for Friday at the Embassy of Russia in Kinshasa, in a bid to adopt a common stand on the resolution of problems related to the aggression.

Rebels of the M23 have been fighting government forces in the east of the country causing the displacement of thousands of people.
