Rwandan Opposition Party Condemns President Kagame’s Recent Speech

On November 16, 2024, Rwandan President Paul Kagame addressed members of the “Unity Club,” an association composed of prominent Rwandan figures aligned with the ruling party, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (FPR). While the speech ostensibly reflected the administration’s political stance, it carried undertones that have sparked sharp criticism, particularly from opposition groups. Among them, the PS Imberakuri party has issued a strongly worded statement denouncing the speech as divisive and laden with veiled threats against political dissidents.

Although President Kagame did not explicitly name opposition leader Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, the PS Imberakuri party argues that the speech unmistakably targeted her. Victoire Ingabire, a staunch critic of the FPR regime, has consistently refused to align with the ruling party’s policies since her release from prison under a presidential pardon. The speech, according to critics, echoed past remarks that sought to intimidate and silence opposition voices. The PS Imberakuri highlighted Kagame’s thinly veiled threats to revoke Ingabire’s presidential pardon and reincarcerate her as a blatant attempt to stifle dissent.

The opposition party expressed its outrage at what it perceives as the FPR’s enduring philosophy: a binary view of politics where one is either a supporter or an enemy. This approach, the party argued, harkens back to an era of political intolerance and brutality, where dissent is met with relentless persecution. For the PS Imberakuri, this rhetoric is symptomatic of a regime that equates political independence with unyielding loyalty to the ruling party.

The statement from PS Imberakuri condemned the President’s remarks as unbecoming of a leader who should serve as a unifying figure above political rivalries. Instead, the party accused Kagame of fueling resentment and deepening the chasm between the ruling elite and opposition groups.

The PS Imberakuri reaffirmed its unwavering support for Victoire Ingabire, applauding her courage in staying true to her political beliefs despite mounting pressures. The party urged her to remain steadfast in the face of adversity, asserting that resilience is the only path forward during these challenging times.

Furthermore, the PS Imberakuri appealed to Rwanda’s international partners, including France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, and Canada, to intervene and urge the Kigali regime to embrace political tolerance. The party emphasized that Rwanda’s allies must act decisively to ensure the ruling administration respects democratic values and refrains from treating political opponents as targets for persecution. The credibility and honor of these nations, the party argued, are at stake.
