Many Rwandans are hungry. Why? Begin with Rwanda’s situation in Global Food Index.
Whether you consider (a) affordability, (b) availability, or (c) quality and safety, Rwanda is poorly ranked – each index is in the red. Which means very poor performance.
Now look at the results of food security assessment conducted in Rwanda in 2015.
What do we see here? Only 40 percent of Rwandans are “food secure.” The next 40 percent is only “marginally food secure” – meaning they could fall into food insecurity any moment. The rest who form nearly 20 percent are food insecure.
That is the background to the ongoing Nzaramba famine which is ravaging Rwanda. Approximately 100,000 families in Rwamagana, Gatsibo, Nyagatare, Bugesera, Kayonza, Kirehe, Nyanza and Gisagara are at risk. Many Rwandans have crossed into Uganda looking for food and work.
Meanwhile, Kagame is deceiving himself and the world that is transforming Africa. How do you improve the lives of over 1 billion people on the African continent, while you cannot ensure food security for 11 million Rwandans?
