Following our article published on 23 January 2019 about Valentine Izere, the head of Amajyambere neighbourhood in Remera Sector, who was seen entering the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) headquarters visibly distressed, new developments suggest she has been missing since mid-September.
Sources in Remera report that Ms Izere has not been seen at work or in the community for several weeks. She has failed to attend numerous local meetings and events where her presence was expected. Colleagues and residents say all her phone numbers have been unreachable for more than a month.
When contacted, the RIB denied having arrested Ms Izere. However, the lack of information about her whereabouts has fuelled speculation. Some suspect she may have fled the country, while others fear she may have been made to disappear an allegation that has surfaced in previous cases involving individuals believed to have links with opposition movements.
Ms Izere was previously linked, by anonymous sources, to opposition leader Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, who resides in the same neighbourhood. No formal accusation or investigation was confirmed at the time.
The circumstances of Ms Izere’s disappearance remain unclear. We will continue to monitor the situation and report on any updates as they become available.
