A vigil in memory of Brigadier General (Rtd) Frank Kanyambo Rusagara will be held on March 31, 2025, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at KG 147 St., House #14 in Kimironko. The funeral service will take place on April 1, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Remera – Giporoso, followed by burial at 4:00 p.m. at Rusororo Cemetery, located in Gasabo District, Kigali.
General Rusagara passed away on March 24, 2025, in solitary confinement at Kanombe Military Prison, where he had spent over three years in isolation. He was arrested in 2014 and sentenced in 2016 to 20 years in prison by a military court for alleged incitement and defaming the government. In 2019, after appeal, his sentence was reduced to 15 years, though his conviction was upheld.
A respected military leader and former Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence, Rusagara spent his final years cut off from his children, and was reportedly denied the chance to speak with his wife, Christine Mukankanza Rusagara, before her passing in the United Kingdom.
He is remembered as a father, grandfather, brother, and friend — a man of integrity, intellect, and conviction whose voice was silenced, but whose legacy endures.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
